The Hidden Crisis Stealing Sleep from Those Who Served

For hundreds of thousands of American veterans, the battle doesn't end when they come home. Nightmare Disorder — a debilitating condition closely linked to PTSD — robs veterans of the restorative sleep their minds and bodies desperately need. The consequences cascade far beyond the bedroom.

"I would wake up mentally and physically drained. I would wake up drenched. My wife actually had to physically wake me up during the middle of the night because of emotional reactions — yelling or screaming or shaking."

— Nate Fritz, NightWare Director of Advocacy & Awareness, U.S. Veteran

The Cascading Impact of Untreated Nightmares

Suicide Risk

Significantly increased risk of suicidal ideation and attempts, independent of other symptoms

Mental Health Decline

Exacerbates anxiety, depression, and PTSD severity, creating a vicious cycle of distress

Cognitive Impairment

Causes daytime brain fog, memory issues, and reduced executive function from fragmented REM sleep

Family & Relationships

Leads to strain on relationships, reduced work productivity, and social withdrawal

Introducing NightWare

NightWare is the first and only FDA-cleared prescription digital therapeutic for the reduction of sleep disturbance related to Nightmare Disorder or nightmares from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It received FDA Breakthrough Device designation in 2020.

Using an Apple Watch and a companion app, NightWare's patented AI algorithms monitor a patient's biometrics throughout the night — continuously learning their unique sleep patterns and intervening precisely when a nightmare begins, without waking the patient.

How NightWare Works

NightWare's approach is elegantly precise: monitor continuously, learn individually, intervene minimally. The result is interrupted nightmares and restored sleep — without waking the patient.

STEP 0101

Wear & Monitor

The patient wears an Apple Watch to bed. NightWare continuously monitors heart rate, heart rate variability, and movement throughout the night.

STEP 0202

Learn & Calibrate

The AI builds a personalized baseline for each patient, calculating their unique "stress index" — a real-time measure of physiological distress during sleep.

STEP 0303

Detect & Intervene

When the stress index rises to nightmare-level thresholds, NightWare delivers a gentle haptic vibration — interrupting the nightmare cycle without waking the patient.

STEP 0404

Improve Over Time

With each night, the system learns and adapts. Sleep quality improves progressively, with many patients reporting measurable improvement within the first two weeks.

JPMF & NightWare: Operation Reboot Sleep

In 2025, the John P. Mayhugh Foundation received a generous donation from the Bezos Courage and Civility Award to launch its groundbreaking Wounds to Wellness Initiative. Operation Reboot Sleep — the initiative's first program — was born from a simple conviction: that every veteran deserves access to the most effective sleep care available.

Operation Reboot Sleep Process

A veteran, family member, or medical provider submits a request to NightWare. The NightWare team then communicates directly with the veteran or their representative to confirm that medical criteria and veteran requirements are met. Once the veteran confirms their commitment to use the device as intended and participate in scheduled surveys, NightWare collects all properly signed documentation and ships the device directly to the recipient — at no cost to the veteran.
If NightWare does not meet the needs of a recipient, the patient mails the device back to NightWare for refurbishment. The device is then cleared and redistributed to another veteran candidate at zero additional cost to the JPMF funding line. This responsible stewardship model ensures that every donated dollar goes as far as possible.
Every $4,000 provides a NightWare device and first-year subscription to a veteran in need. NightWare's criteria-based process and concierge-style service ensures good-steward practices of all funds. Devices that do not meet the needs of a recipient are refurbished and reissued to new veteran candidates at no additional cost — maximizing the impact of every donation.
