The John P. Mayhugh Foundation, in partnership with NightWare, is delivering FDA-cleared digital therapeutics to U.S. veterans suffering from PTSD-related nightmares and debilitating sleep disturbances.
"Better pathways to recovery, from wounds to wellness."
For hundreds of thousands of American veterans, the battle doesn't end when they come home. Nightmare Disorder — a debilitating condition closely linked to PTSD — robs veterans of the restorative sleep their minds and bodies desperately need. The consequences cascade far beyond the bedroom.
Nearly 4 in 5 people with PTSD experience recurring nightmares
Nightmare disorder drives a 2–5x higher rate of suicidal ideation
An average of 22 veterans die by suicide every day in the United States
85% of patients with nightmare disorder receive inadequate or no care
"I would wake up mentally and physically drained. I would wake up drenched. My wife actually had to physically wake me up during the middle of the night because of emotional reactions — yelling or screaming or shaking."
— Nate Fritz, NightWare Director of Advocacy & Awareness, U.S. Veteran
Significantly increased risk of suicidal ideation and attempts, independent of other symptoms
Exacerbates anxiety, depression, and PTSD severity, creating a vicious cycle of distress
Causes daytime brain fog, memory issues, and reduced executive function from fragmented REM sleep
Leads to strain on relationships, reduced work productivity, and social withdrawal
NightWare is the first and only FDA-cleared prescription digital therapeutic for the reduction of sleep disturbance related to Nightmare Disorder or nightmares from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It received FDA Breakthrough Device designation in 2020.
Using an Apple Watch and a companion app, NightWare's patented AI algorithms monitor a patient's biometrics throughout the night — continuously learning their unique sleep patterns and intervening precisely when a nightmare begins, without waking the patient.

NightWare's approach is elegantly precise: monitor continuously, learn individually, intervene minimally. The result is interrupted nightmares and restored sleep — without waking the patient.

In 2025, the John P. Mayhugh Foundation received a generous donation from the Bezos Courage and Civility Award to launch its groundbreaking Wounds to Wellness Initiative. Operation Reboot Sleep — the initiative's first program — was born from a simple conviction: that every veteran deserves access to the most effective sleep care available.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2017, JPMF is committed to building better pathways of recovery for military veterans and their families battling PTS, TBI, addiction, and suicide. The Foundation hosts the annual Hero's Journey Symposium and advocates for holistic, innovative approaches to veteran mental health.
The maker of the world's only FDA-cleared prescription digital therapeutic for nightmare disorder. NightWare's concierge-style service model ensures that every device reaches the right patient, is used effectively, and — if it doesn't meet a recipient's needs — is refurbished and reissued to another veteran at no additional cost.
Funded devices distributed in the first six months of the program
Over 70% of recipients actively using their device as prescribed
Overwhelming positive responses across all reported outcomes

These are not statistics. These are real veterans — from Vietnam to post-9/11 — whose lives have been transformed by restored sleep. Hear their stories in their own words.
The ripple effects of restored sleep extend far beyond the veteran themselves. Listen to how NightWare has positively influenced entire families.
